Workshop Objectives:

This course provides an overview of Mobile Handsets and the technologies that are used within them. It commences with a look at the fundamental requirements, before exploring the individual hardware and software components within the handset. Technology choices within standard or advanced modules and features are explored.


Procedures and operation of the handset within the Mobile Network are explained in detail, including actions at switch on, cell selection, location updates, establishing calls and sessions, power control, handovers, security, access to messaging services, and support for roaming.


Attend this course and you will be able to:

  • List the basic requirements of the handset from technical, operator and user perspectives
  • Identify all of the main hardware and software components of the Mobile Handset and describe their function. Include both basic modules and the more advanced
  • Explain the security procedures applied to authenticate the subscriber
  • Describe the work of the standardisation bodies in relation to the development of handset technologies
  • Name the main Operating System options available to handset vendors
  • Follow and explain the procedures and operation of the Mobile Handset, including at switch on, cell selection, power control, handover, location updates, access to services cluding Voice, Data, and messaging), and support for roaming
